This year, we’ve set our sights on something bigger than programmes: transforming our home at the Cricket Centre into a space that works harder for young people and the local community.
We’ve started with phase one, and what was once a storage room has now been transformed into a smart, welcoming conference and community space.
With support from a Common Ground government initiative grant, we’ve refurbished the room and brought it back into use as the Molly Gilbert Room, named in honour of one of the players from the pioneering Redoubtables Women’s Cricket Club.
The Redoubtables were a trailblazing Surrey-based women’s cricket team, formed in 1921 and originating from Brixton Ladies Cricket Club. Naming this space after Molly is a small way of recognising the women who helped create the sporting history on which so much of our work today is built.
And the room has plenty of life ahead of it. From workshops and meetings to gaming clubs, creative sessions and community activities, the Molly Gilbert Room will give young people and local residents another positive space to meet, learn, create and connect.
But this is only the beginning.
Phase one is complete. Phase two? Padel.
We’re already working on plans to develop our facilities further, creating even more opportunities for our young people and community to get active, learn new skills and spend time in a space they can call their own.
Watch this space.
