Legal & General Opening Doors for Young People

Last month, our Young Ambassadors and Street Elite programme participants were invited to visit Legal & General’s HQ, in central London.

During the visit, the LGIM DC Division team engaged the young people in conversations around pensions, pitching, budgeting and how to make sustainable financial choices. They also gave a tour of their state-of-the-art facilities!

One Young Ambassador shared: “I didn’t realise that a career in pensions could happen in such a modern and exciting office.”

Breaking the negative stereotypes around pensions and finances has inspired each of the young people to explore a career path in the finance sector. This was encouraged when Legal & General arranged a meet and greet with some of their younger employees.

Not everyone who works at Legal & General has a degree in their job roles. Some employees shared that they had a university degree in sports, marketing and technology. This allowed young people who were less interested in insurance and pensions to that Legal & General provide explore other job roles in the finance sector.

One Street Elite participant shared: “When I first arrived, I didn’t feel like I belonged there, but talking to their employees made me feel confident, so now I’m looking at their apprenticeship scheme.”

Legal & General have been incredible supporters of our charity, having previously taken part in volunteer days at our HQ to fundraise for our VI Rugby, London Futures and Girls Win programmes.

Jo Coan is Head of DC Client Acquisition & Change at Legal & General. She shared: “It was great to give back to The Change Foundation and share what life inside an Investment Management firm is really like and to unpick that we all didn’t envision ourselves working in pensions, even for people like me who were never very good at maths at school. Sharing our career journeys and knowledge of our industry really felt like we could give something back to a charity that is doing so much.”

We look forward to developing this relationship together and connecting more young people from our programmes with their career opportunities.
