Intergenerational Sport Programme – Romania
The programme strengthens community bonds while developing a new generation of trained Social Change Coaches.
Aim & Who
Delivered in partnership with the Royal Margaret of Romania Foundation, this programme brings together children, young people and older adults through sport to build connection, shared learning and community cohesion. It also develops local volunteers into Social Change Coaches, equipping them with skills in sport, youth work and inclusive practice.
Why it’s needed
In Romania, nearly 1 in 3 people are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, with many communities in Bucharest facing inequality, limited opportunities and rising social challenges. Young people report exposure to negative online influences and lack of positive role models, while older adults often experience isolation. Participants tell us, “We don’t usually spend time with people from other generations.”
Impact
Through adapted delivery of programmes such as Rugby 4 Change, Netball 4 Change and Tennis Talk, participants build mutual understanding, confidence and respect across generations. The programme strengthens community bonds while developing a new generation of trained Social Change Coaches. This unique partnership also creates shared learning, helping shape more inclusive, intergenerational spaces both in Romania and within The Change Foundation’s work in the UK.
