Visually Impaired Rugby

The programme is redefining accessibility in sport

Aim & Who
Visually Impaired Rugby is a seven-a-side, touch format of rugby created by The Change Foundation for blind and visually impaired players (B1–B5 classifications). It supports individuals of all ages living with sight loss, providing access to competitive sport, leadership and community. Now played across England, Ireland, Wales, France, New Zealand and Japan, the programme is increasingly player-led, with participants shaping and growing the game both domestically and internationally.

Why it’s needed
Over 2 million people in the UK live with sight loss, with many facing barriers to sport, isolation and reduced wellbeing. Participants often tell us, “I never thought rugby was something I could be part of.” Opportunities for inclusive, competitive sport remain limited, particularly beyond youth provision.

Impact
Since its creation in 2015, the sport has grown into an international movement, with tournaments, leagues and global partnerships. Players build confidence, leadership and a strong sense of belonging. The programme is redefining accessibility in sport, changing perceptions of disability and creating a thriving, player-led community.
