The Change Foundation launches Boxing 4 Change

We are proud to announce that at the end of October the first cohort in our brand new Boxing 4 Change programme started training, thanks to funding received from the Postcode Community Trust.  Running at the Limehouse Boxing Academy, at the Lansbury Spotlight in Tower Hamlets, the new programme targets young people aged 16-21 living in some of the most deprived areas of London who are on the fringes of criminal activity. We will help them, through boxing, to work through anything that they may be struggling with, and prepare for adult life, including finding pathways to employment, primarily in the sport and fitness sector, through our trademark sustained mentoring.

We have partnered with England Boxing coaches Mark Collings and Shah Rahman to run the programme.  They are long-time friends of ours, having coached boxing at Street Elite festivals for many years, and this is the next step in a joint journey that we intend to grow much further.  There will be 2 cohorts per year, running for 20 weeks each, and every participant will gain boxing coaching qualifications, along with first aid and child protection certificates. We have employment pathways into local gyms, boxing work in schools and Pupil referral units, and within the sports equipment industry.

The participants will be blessed with the chance to visit the EIS in Sheffield, where the England boxing team trains, to rub shoulders with the current squad and see the state of the art coaching techniques used by elite boxers.  For anyone who shows the talent to go forward in world of boxing there is a pathway, but the main focus of the programme is on helping these young men to grow into excellent adults and key figures in their communities. The programme runs in an open gym with the rest of the Limehouse Boxing Academy going about their business simultaneously, so these young men have an instant positive community surrounding them and somewhere to belong, which we see as a key aspect in shaping the futures of the participants. We look forward to sharing our success stories and learning in due course.
