Street Elite graduate takes centre stage
Recently, one of our earliest Street Elite graduates, Irfan Ayub, was invited to speak at the latest Talent Leadership in Action forum at The Shard, in central London. Irfan, who has worked for housing giant, Berkeley Group for six years since graduating from The Change Foundation run programme, joined a panel of young people put together by Movement to Work to talk on the topic “Why embracing diversity is good for business and how to ensure an inclusive approach to your workforce”.
Irfan discussed his experiences of growing up as a gang member, his time with Street Elite and how it has helped him get to where he is now. Irfan spoke wonderfully about his journey and credited Street Elite and The Change Foundation for its part in helping him into the job market. Irfan has worked for Berkeley for six years now and is an assistant site manager. He highlighted possibly the biggest barrier to finding a career for people in his and similar positions. “I’m in a job where my colleagues must have degrees. I’ve no qualifications on paper but by being seen first-hand in the workplace, it meant I didn’t need them. More employers must recruit this way.” Street Elite doesn’t require qualifications, we have worked hard with employers to be in a position to put young people with the right skills in front of the right employers, already sure that, with support, they are more than qualified to drive businesses forward.
We’re all very proud of Irfan, and we are sure that his words, and those of the other fantastic panelists, inspires more organisations to look at individuals with “unorthodox” backgrounds to lead the businesses of the future, hand in hand with us and Movement to Work.
Talent Leadership in Action is a community of leaders from HR, Procurement, Operations, Finance and General Management who want to be inspired by the ‘art of the possible’ around the workforce management agenda, facilitated by KellyOCG. They come together once per quarter to discuss the hot topics related to talent management and on this occasion invited friends and partners of ours, Movement to Work, to put together a panel of young people to speak. Movement to Work is a fantastic charity doing wonders to find work for young people all over Britain.
