Martin Gill cycles across Europe to help change young lives

During July and August 2017, cycling hero, Martin Gill conquered an incredible fundraising challenge for The Change Foundation, raising over £45,000 and helping us expand our life changing work with some of the UK’s most marginalised and at risk young people. Martin cycled 6,175km across Europe from its northern tip at Nordkapp in Norway to its southern tip at Tarifa in Spain, sometimes riding over 300 km in a day, often in blistering heat as he worked his way south.

Martin’s aim is to help provide pathways for young people to succeed and feels The Change Foundation’s programmes using sport and dance provide all of the skills necessary to get our young people on the path to a happy and successful life.

Martin has said following the ride: “I knew this was going to be a tough challenge both mentally and physically but the combination of 32 days on the road and the weather conditions pushed me to my limits. Without the help of the support team (my wife Julie!) I would not have made it through to the end in Tarifa. The funds raised I know will be well used by the charity and I hope my journey might also provide some inspiration to others to follow their dreams and push themselves to new levels of achievement.

Change Foundation CEO, Andy Sellins, said, ‘I felt very privileged to welcome Martin over the finish line in Tarifa. He’s a very modest and unassuming hero to us and the way he just gets on with the hard graft with no fuss and a can-do attitude is a life lesson for all of us. Martin is one of the most inspirational people I have ever met and I’m very proud to be able to call him my friend.’

Martin’s ride was supported by a corporate sponsor, Trinity Fire and Security Systems, who provided significant financial contributions and some employees of which joined Martin for the section of the ride in France.

Martin and his wife Julie held a fundraising dinner at AFC Wimbledon Football Club on Saturday 10th June with an evening of food, music and dancing. The evening included a live and silent auction as well as a raffle. It was a great evening raising over £6,000 towards Martin’s fundraising total.

They have also had great support from the wonderful Susan Cusack and her SW19 Velo Cycling Group who were a huge support with the fundraising dinner and in addition had a group of 14 cyclists complete a 300km cycle ride from Wimbledon to Devon in a day supporting Martin as he trained for his cross Europe challenge.
