Wallington & Carshalton MP, Tom Brake, recently helped local sports charity, ‘Cricket for Change’ (now part of The Change Foundation), celebrate their 10th Anniversary of being at The Cricket Centre, on Plough Lane in Wallington. The Cricket Centre, once the site of a BT Sports Ground, was constructed with the able support of Phil Tufnell, the charity’s President & former England Spinner and now sports broadcaster.
Back in 2004, ‘Tuffers’, was offered help by ITV show ‘With a Little Help from My Friends’ to build and create The Cricket Centre for the charity. The Cricket Centre in Wallington is purpose built for young sports people with a disability as well as being used as training base for many of the participants on the charity’s programmes. In 2009, the Cricket Centre was extended to with the addition of state of the art cricket nets, to help encourage the work of the charity 12 months of the year.
Tom Brake, local MP, said, “10 years in Wallington is a great milestone for a fantastic charity. I am very pleased to be able to give my support to a charity which works with some of the most marginalised young people, giving them a sense of purpose, hope, training and lots of fun!”
John Gilbert, Chairman of the charity’s Trustees commented, “We are all very proud of the work and efforts of the Cricket for Change team over the past 30+ years. The Cricket Centre is home to several of the charities cricket based programmes. We look forward to the Cricket for Change flag flying over the Cricket Centre for many years to come”
The Cricket Centre not only supports of the work of the charity with young people but is also a wonderful community venue available to hire for business meetings, corporate days, wedding receptions, funeral wakes and private parties.
