Laureus Sport for Good Cricket Day

On the 19th September 2019, The Change Foundation attended the Oval Cricket ground to participate in the Laureus Sport for Good corporate cricket match fundraiser. The day started off with a presentation from former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan, now one of Laureus’ ambassadors, who spoke about why we were there and where the money raised would be going to.

Laureus are using the power of sport to end violence, discrimination and disadvantage, proving that sport can change the world. They support more than 160 sports-based community programmes in over 40 countries, helping to address the many social challenges facing children and young people around the world and we are delighted that one of those is our Netball 4 Change programme. Netball4Change, running in London and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, uses the rules and the game of netball to teach girls and young women how to stay safe on social media. It empowers them to think more positively about their social graph, how it can affect their prospects for the future and raises awareness of negative social influences.

After Michael’s introduction it was down to business with team allocation. We were paired with Track Academy, another deserving organisation supported by Laureus.

We started off very strongly, with Ross hitting his first ever boundary and excellent coaching skills from Dan (who also runs our Refugee Cricket Project). The Male to Female ratio within our team was fantastic and everyone really thrived and pulled their weight. A few of our trustees and ambassadors were also there cheering us on from the stalls and got to see what a great improvement we made over the last year (as we came last the previous year).

5 matches later despite our strong start, we ended up coming in 4th place. However, two of our team members – Dan and Shedaine, won an award for best catch of the day and best fielder. Both were praised by ex-international rugby player Danielle Waterman.

Overall, the team really enjoyed the day and it was a great way to meet more Laureus employees and continue to maintain our close relationship with Laureus.
