Changing the lives of children with a disability in Mumbai

In early July, 5 of our disability sport specialists, Alex, Nav, Dan Levey, Harrison, and Ross were joined by special guest, John Ryan, on our latest visit to Mumbai, India. They were there as a continuation of Hit The Top Mumbai, a programme run jointly with our long-term partner charity, Magic Bus, delivering disability cricket for children with hearing and visual impairments, physical disabilities and learning disabilities.

The group were there for 4 days for capacity building, training Community Youth Leaders from Magic Bus. For the past 2 years The Change Foundation and Magic Bus have been jointly delivering Hit The Top Mumbai, funded by the BT Supporters Club, which supports over a 100 young children by providing a long term all-year-round programme that uses the game of cricket to teach independence skills in travel, communication and literacy development.

There is no government special school system in India and children with a disability often get lost in the mainstream and are predominantly left out of P.E sessions and only take part in simple exercises. Hit the Top provides specialist access for these children from a range of schools in Mumbai with the aim of developing a model of practice for other areas.

In addition to the training, the team got to see the Magic Bus coaches in action, running a sports festival a school for children with hearing-impairments and it was a great chance for reciprocal learning. It is always impressive to see how much the Magic Bus coaches can do with so few resources.

The team were joined by special guest, John, who got the chance to join the team when he won an auction prize at a wine tasting event organised by Berkeley Group. He was a valued member of the trip and got really stuck in to all aspects.

Consultancy is a growing part of our work, in the last year we have been contracted by Magic Bus, The Tennis Foundation, Muslim Hands, and Basketball Euroleague to capacity build and solve problems around sport for social change programmes.  If you are interested in hearing more about our consultancy work then please get in touch with Navjeet Sira.
